HSE Becomes Night of the Arts Platform on Night of November 3-4
During Night of the Arts, guests of HSE’s festival took a stroll on Myasnitskaya Street, which was closed to automobiles specially for the event. Myasnitskaya became the location of a large stage for performances by student groups of the university. More than 50 HSE students and friends sang, danced, and read poems for guests of the celebration, and another 50 worked at the event as volunteers.Instructors from the Faculty of Design had a special exposition called ‘The Latest Teacher’s Exhibition.’ HSE students organized workshops in a hall of the university for sand painting, gift box making, and henna painting. Cosmopolitanism, Exile and World Literature Today
Galin Tihanov, George Steiner Professor of Comparative Literature at Queen Mary, University of London, will deliver a series of three lectures at the Higher School of Economics this week. His most recent research has been on cosmopolitanism, exile, and transnationalism. Professor Tihanov recently sat down with the HSE news service to speak about his research and teaching interests, including his work on Russian literature.

The sixth ‘New View’ conference for junior Japan experts has come to an end. The conference was organized by HSE’s School of Asian Studies together with the Japanese culture division of the Margarita Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature (Japan Foundation) and the Association of Japanese Studies.

HSE Builds Cooperation with Malta in Energy, Innovations and Education
On 22 September 2014 the Higher School of Economics hosted a delegation of young representatives of the public sector, science and business from Malta, headed by Aaron Farrugia, CEO of Malta Freeport Corporation Ltd. Among other members of the delegation were Christopher Cutajar, Secretary of the Fgura Local Council, Roderick Formosa, First Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malta and Law professor at the University of Malta, and Joseph Muscat, Head of the Research Laboratory of Malta.
Smart Cities – Japanese Style
The HSE Institute of Regional Studies and Urban Planning held a panel discussion entitled ‘Developing Cities and Infrastructure’ as part of the Russian-Japanese forum ‘Points of Intersection: Business, Technology, Culture’ that took place in Moscow. The discussion focused on development opportunities in Moscow and the adoption of solutions to urban problems already applied in Tokyo.

Inventing in Just 48 Hours
A cardio-undershirt, a cyber piggy bank, a flying advertising platform, and other unexpected inventions were all the result of the second FabLab Weekend hackathon, which was carried out by HSE’s Prototyping Centre. Participants had just 48 hours to create a prototype of a useful technological product ready to enter the market. The final presentation took place on September 22, when the winners were announced.
HSE roundtable at the Istanbul UN Internet Governance Forum 2014
This year at the annual UN Internet Governance Forum, IGF in Istanbul, besides the HSE professors and usual dignitaries, Alexandra Permyakova, a Master’s student on the Electronic Business programme at the Faculty of Business Informatics got the chance to go along and take part in the Forum. The HSE delegation organised a roundtable discussion on Empowering displaced people and migrants through online education services.
